Vehicle descriptions on Facebook Marketplace are not the place to get clever. Facebook's algorithm and buyers both reward clarity, honesty, and skimmability. Here is the structure that consistently drives more messages — with templates for sedans, SUVs, trucks, and luxury units.

The 100 to 150 word rule

Facebook Marketplace rewards descriptions in the 100 to 150 word range. Shorter feels lazy and signals a low-effort listing. Longer gets truncated in the feed preview and looks like a wall of text. Stay in the sweet spot.

Facebook's search algorithm also reads description text for keyword matching. A well-written description helps you show up for searches like "Toyota RAV4 AWD" or "crew cab diesel" even when those exact terms aren't in your title.

The structure that works

Line 1: Year, Make, Model, Trim, one key feature or selling point.
Example: "2021 Toyota RAV4 XLE AWD — one owner, clean Carfax."

Lines 2 to 3: 3 to 4 standout features. Mix practical and emotional.
Example: "Heated seats, blind-spot monitoring, sunroof, and Apple CarPlay. Just serviced."

Lines 4 to 5: Condition and history. Honest, specific.
Example: "Interior is immaculate. Exterior has a small door ding on the rear passenger side (shown in photos). Fresh oil change, new tires at 38k."

Line 6: Call to action. One clear next step.
Example: "Message us to schedule a test drive or apply online."

SUV template

2021 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD — 48,300 miles, one owner.

Third-row seating, tow package, heated front seats, power liftgate, adaptive cruise. Roomy and family-ready.

Excellent condition. Minor wear on driver's seat bolster (shown). New brakes and rotors at 46k.

Tow package, spray-in bed liner, backup camera, Uconnect 5, heated seats. Strong running truck ready for work or weekend.

Clean Carfax, no accidents. Light scratch on tailgate (pictured). Recent service: oil, transmission fluid, plugs.

Finance with any credit. Message for out-the-door pricing or to schedule a drive.

Luxury template

2020 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport — 41,200 miles, one owner, BMW-serviced.

Premium package, driving assistance professional, heated/cooled seats, panoramic roof, 21" M wheels. Immaculate.

Clean Carfax, all service records. Comes with second key and owner's manuals. Just completed manufacturer inspection.

Financing with competitive rates. Message to arrange a private viewing or test drive.

What to avoid

  • "$0 down!" style calls to action. Facebook de-ranks them.

  • Excessive emojis. One or two is fine. Fifteen looks like spam.

  • ALL CAPS. Triggers spam detection.

  • Phone numbers in the description. Facebook prefers Messenger-first contact and will reduce distribution on posts that push people off-platform.

  • Price tricks. "Price does not include doc fee, tax, title..." — be clear upfront.

  • Hidden damage. Disclose it. Hidden issues kill conversion at the showroom.

  • "Call now!", "Won't last!", "Hurry!" Facebook's spam filters target these phrases.

  • External URLs beyond your dealership site. Keep links minimal.

Why honesty wins

Buyers on Marketplace are sensitive to feeling deceived. If your photos show a scratch and your description says "pristine condition," they will not message you — or they'll show up furious. Conversely, "small scratch on bumper (shown)" signals trust.

No-show rates on appointments drop sharply when descriptions are accurate. BDCs spend less time on dead leads. Salespeople close more appointments that actually showed up.

The math: a 20% reduction in no-shows at the appointment saves 10 to 15 hours of BDC time per week at a typical dealership.

Keyword strategy for Facebook search

Facebook's Marketplace search is more primitive than Google's. It looks for exact-match keywords in titles and descriptions. Work in relevant terms naturally:

  • Drivetrain (AWD, 4WD, FWD, 4x4)

  • Body style (sedan, SUV, crew cab, coupe)

  • Common feature searches ("Apple CarPlay", "heated seats", "sunroof", "leather")

  • Transmission ("manual" for enthusiasts specifically)

  • Fuel type if relevant ("diesel", "hybrid", "electric")

Work these in naturally — don't keyword-stuff.

Rewriting bad examples

Bad: "BEAUTIFUL 2021 SUV!!! MUST SEE!!! $0 DOWN OAC!!! CALL TODAY (555) 123-4567 — WON'T LAST!!!"

Good: "2021 Honda CR-V EX AWD — 41,200 miles, clean Carfax. Heated seats, sunroof, Apple CarPlay, and Honda Sensing safety suite. Excellent condition, recent service. Financing available for all credit levels. Message to schedule a test drive this week."

Same vehicle, dramatically different Facebook performance.
